Alliance Library System and LearningTimes Offer Handheld Librarian 2!
More people than 2000 people attended the first ever Handheld Librarian Conference in July 2009 which featured a wide array of collaboration, learning and networking activities focused on Mobile Library Services! The Handheld Librarian 2 will continue the dialog with a 2-day online conference scheduled for February 17-18, 2010 and is now accepting registrations at http://www.handheldlibrarian.org. The program — sponsored by Alliance Library System, and LearningTimes — will include a series of wonderful keynote and featured speakers collection of available resources, discussions boards, and access to the recording of all live events for one year after the conference. More people than ever are using mobile devices for a wide variety of purposes including communication, internet access, text messaging, and entertainment. It is important that libraries provide mobile services as handheld use increases.
The conference will feature three exciting keynote talks:
· Joan K. Lippincott from the Coalition for Networked Information speaking about “Mobilizing Libraries for Today’s Students”
· Joe Murphy from Yale University speaking about “This is Now: The Mobile Library”
· Tom Peters of TAP Information Services, addressing “Morphing with Mobile”
The Handheld Librarian II will also include the real-life experiences of libraries and information professionals. We are now soliciting presentation proposals highlighting current, evolving and future issues in mobile library services.

Research Data Access and Preservation Summit
An ASIS&T Summit
Phoenix, AZ | Hyatt Regency | April 9-10, 2010
In cooperation with the Coalition for Networked Information
Register at https://www.asis.org/Conferences/IA10/rdap10regform.php
Early rates end 2/26
Researchers in all fields generate and analyze enormous quantities of digital data. In fields ranging throughout the sciences and humanities, managing, preserving, and sharing these data require substantial capital and human resources and new kinds of information professionals who are able to integrate technology, content, and policy skills. This summit aims to bring together leaders in data centers, laboratories, and libraries in different organizational and disciplinary settings to share ideas and techniques for managing, preserving, and sharing large-scale research data repositories with an eye toward achieving infrastructure-independent access and stewardship. The summit will engage three kinds of leaders: those from projects with experience in integrating high-performance technologies; those from large scale collaboratories in science, social science, and the humanities; and those from institutions coping with the challenges of integrating different technologies and data collections.

Final Report on CSHE/Mellon Study on Faculty Practices in Scholarly Communication
The Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of California, Berkeley, with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, has been conducting a major multi-year study of how faculty needs and research practices shape their choices about scholarly communication. The final report on this work, Assessing the Future Landscape of Scholarly Communication: An Exploration of Faculty Values and Needs in Seven Disciplines is now available at http://escholarship.org/uc/cshe_fsc. This is a very important look at where faculty thinking and practice stands in regard to the changing scholarly communication environment, including a sensitive examination of differences across disciplines. Updates on this work have been presented at some CNI membership meetings; we hope to be able to host a report on this most current work in the near future.
NISO Forum: Discovery to Delivery
CNI Associate Executive Director Joan Lippincott will give the keynote at this conference, providing perspectives on how users are discovering and using information today.
———————–
Join NISO for the one-day forum “Discovery to Delivery: Creating a First-Class User Experience” on Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center, Atlanta, GA.
ABOUT THE FORUM
There is information everywhere today and access to it relies on a seamless discovery process that offers all appropriate options to the unassisted information seeker. The journey between discovery and delivery is accomplished with a variety of differing technologies and processes, many of which depend on a reliable and accurate knowledge base of coverage information. As demands on these technologies change and expand, NISO supports a variety of efforts to strengthen and improve them. This forum will explore new and innovative ways to meet user’s needs and expectations for discovery and delivery of content in the networked world.
NISO members receive a substantial discount. Early bird discounts for all registrants are available through March 12, 2010. A student discount is also available. For more information and to register, visit www.niso.org/news/events/2010/d2d/.

Joint Conference on Digital Libraries JCDL 2010
June 21-25, 2010 Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
Paper Submission Deadline Extended to February 1
Sponsored by ACM SIGIR, ACM SIGWEB, ASIS&T, and IEEE-CS TCDL
The ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) is the major international research forum focused on digital libraries and associated technical, practical, and social issues. JCDL encompasses the many meanings of the term “digital libraries”, including (but not limited to) new forms of information institutions; operational information systems with all manner of digital content; new means of selecting, collecting, organizing, distributing, and evaluating digital content; and theoretical models of information media, including document genres and electronic publishing. Digital libraries are distinguished from information retrieval systems because they include more types of media, provide additional functionality and services, and include other stages of the information life cycle, from creation through use. Digital libraries can also be viewed as an extension of the services libraries currently provide.

Aspen Institute Report on Big Data
There’s an interesting report available for download from the Aspen Institute, titled The Promise and Peril of Big Data, summarizing a workshop the Institute held in 2009. This can be found at
http://www.aspeninstitute.org/publications/promise-peril-big-data
This report explores some of the same issues discussed in Microsoft’s recent book The Fourth Paradigm: Data-Intensive Scientific Discovery, which can be found at
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/collaboration/fourthparadigm/
but at a less technical level, and also looks more broadly at implications beyond the sciences.
