Over the last seven years, the University of California (UC) Libraries have prioritized negotiating agreements that support open access publishing and secure access to content with many of its largest journal publishers. UC now has about twenty such agreements, covering more than half of the journal output of the university system and over 11,000 unique journal titles. With so many publishing venues to choose from, authors were struggling to determine whether their journal(s) of choice were eligible for open access publishing support. To address this challenge, the California Digital Library (CDL) has developed the Journal Open Access Lookup Tool (JOLT). This tool offers a journal-level search across all covered publishers to provide authors with specific details about the support available to them. This session will present the tool, discuss the impact it has had on UC authors and librarians to date, and identify some of the potential next steps that CDL may take to increase the usefulness of this service.
