The consolidation of vendor-provided library technologies limits the ability of libraries to adopt the best-fit solutions for their campus in favor of vertically integrated, cradle-to-grave academic technology stacks. This strategic growth area for publishers and information brokers seeks to streamline and monetize enterprise workflows at research universities. In an effort to build an alternative model for library technology stacks, libraries and vendors collaborated to develop a community-developed, app-based, open-source library services platform: The Future of Libraries is Open (FOLIO). Unlike other library services platforms, FOLIO can be implemented through a choice of vendors or hosted locally, a deliberate strategy by the FOLIO community to counteract vendor lock-in. This panel will explore the adoption of FOLIO at Cornell, Duke, Michigan State, Stanford, and the University of Colorado; it will also discuss strategic partnerships, implementation plans, and the impact of FOLIO on the research library and university ecosystem.
