Open access research is only truly “open access” if it is equally accessible to all. People with disabilities are the world’s largest minority, but currently less than 3% of research outputs meet accessibility guidelines.
In response to this need, arXiv, a curated, open-access repository for scientific scholarly papers, launched HTML as a format across all new papers submitted to arXiv, with the eventual goal of providing an HTML format for every paper in arXiv’s corpus – over 2 million papers.
In this video, we’ll discuss the importance of HTML for accessibility in research, the challenges in converting formulas from LaTeX / PDF to HTML accurately, our collaboration with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) developers in improving HTML conversion, and our future goals for accessibility in research.
