The United Rainbow Colors of Bots

Home / Project Briefing Pages / CNI Fall 2021 Project Briefings / The United Rainbow Colors of Bots

December 1, 2021

Tal Ayalon
Open Knowledge Repository Project Manager
World Bank Group

“While traditional paywall publishers can take advantage of industry standard COUNTER reports to communicate usage to subscribing libraries, no similar standard exists for open access (OA) content. Instead, many organizations are stuck with proxy metrics like sessions and page views that struggle to discriminate between robotic access and genuine engagement.” – National Information Standards Organization (NISO) Plus 2021 session “Open Access and Analytics”

In this presentation, we will examine types and levels of machine-generated (“bot”) activity in the World Bank’s Open Knowledge Repository and discuss tools to combat the bot statistics challenge in open access repositories.
