Using Data from NIH’s iCite to Dynamically Provide Bibliometric-Based Decision Support

Leaders at academic medical institutions often lack decision support for allocating scarce resources and opportunities to their faculty. The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) iCite service offers a validated foundation to gauge the influence of a given person’s scholarly output. iCite outputs a Relative Citation Ratio for an article in a way that is field-weighted and benchmarked by year. As described in a recently published Public Library of Open Science (PLOS) One paper, ReCiter is an open source publication management system. With this initiative, we will use data from iCite and ReCiter to programmatically produce metrics speaking to a person’s scholarly influence as compared to intra-institutional and extra-institutional peers.
