The Virtual Copyright Education Center: Update and Discussion

Over the past year, Columbia University Libraries’ Copyright Advisory Services, the Copyright Office at the University of Michigan Library, and an advisory group of world-class experts piloted a new Virtual Copyright Education Center with classes on copyright issues and management. The pilot, made possible through collaboration with LYRASIS, was a tremendous success, with hundreds of registrants in new, online copyright education classes including a basic copyright course made free of charge and distributed publicly. We aspire to inform and empower our community, recognizing that copyright and related issues are foundational concerns in our networked, digital world emphasizing equitable access to reliable, relevant, understandable information. There is a convergence of copyright issues across museums, libraries, archives, research, scholarship, and education, their impact on day-to-day and strategic decisions, as well as the distinct ways in which copyright turns up across these sectors. We aim to address these in this initiative. This session will include an update on our pilot and our work towards a sustainable service model.
