In 2018, the University of Miami Libraries (UML) joined Ex Libris in a partnership to develop Esploro, then the latest research information system to come to the commercial market. A central feature of Esploro is to create a full and accurate representation of research output and data of affiliated researchers using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. To harness the full promise of AI, the UML Esploro Implementation Team developed a mechanism to assemble researcher data from multiple external sources to train the Esploro AI model and enhance its accuracy. Our work has also involved collaboration with librarian subject specialists to enlist their expertise, as well as strategic partnerships with the UM Office of Research & Scholarship and UM Information Technology, to encourage institutional buy-in and adoption. External partners in this effort include the University of Iowa, Brandeis University, and other early adopters, as we collectively strive to maximize our human and technical systems for the benefit of scholarship.
