In an environment where library service models are continually evolving, the Digital Borderlands initiative at the University of Arizona Libraries (UAL) is exploring strategies for integrating a broad range of library services into the research enterprise through disbursing competitive seed grants. With funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the seed grants support data-intensive humanities scholarship focused on the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands with open access for all research outputs. This briefing will describe the Digital Borderlands initiative, including topics such as the funded research projects and their use of library services, the proposal development process between UAL and potential grantees, data management and scholarly communication consultations within researcher workflows, intersections of digital scholarship and primary sources, and the opportunities and challenges of conducting trans-border research. The session will also analyze how Digital Borderlands builds upon the University of Calgary Library’s earlier work on integrating library services into faculty research in ways that can be replicated at other institutions.
